Visa Interview Questions and How to Prepare

Last updated

Some visas are won on paper. The US visa is won in the room. For Nigerians the interview is often the single point where the decision is made, so knowing the questions and how to answer them matters more than any document.

This guide covers who gets interviewed, the questions officers actually ask, and how to answer without tripping yourself up.

Which visas involve an interview

Not every destination interviews you.

So when people talk about visa interview nerves, they almost always mean the US.

The questions you should expect

US officers ask a small set of predictable questions. They are looking for clear, consistent answers, not speeches.

How to answer

Three rules carry most of the weight.

The ties question is the one to prepare hardest. Officers want to see why you will come back: a stable job, a business, property, or family you are responsible for. Read our proof of ties guide and be ready to state your reasons to return in plain terms.

What to bring

You will not submit a thick file, but carry evidence you can produce on request.

Organise everything so you can hand over any single item in seconds.

The dos and donts

How Oya Visa helps

We prepare you for the interview the way it actually runs: getting your DS-160 right, organising your proof of ties and funds, and rehearsing the exact questions officers ask Nigerians. See our pricing, where interview prep is included on our higher tiers, or browse the full visa guides hub.

Frequently asked questions

Which visas require an interview for Nigerians? +

The US visa almost always involves an in-person interview at the Consulate in Lagos or the Embassy in Abuja. UK and Canada visitor visas usually do not require an interview and are decided on your documents at the visa application centre. Some categories, like certain study or work routes, may add a credibility interview.

How long is the US visa interview? +

It is short, often two to four minutes. The officer reads your DS-160, asks a few direct questions, and decides on the spot. The brevity is normal and does not mean anything has gone wrong.

What is the most common visa interview question? +

Officers usually start with your purpose of travel, then move to who is paying, your job, and your ties to Nigeria. Answer each one in a sentence or two. Keep it truthful and consistent with what you wrote on your form.

Should I memorise answers before my visa interview? +

No. Scripted answers sound rehearsed and raise doubt. Know your own facts, your job, your funds, your travel dates, and speak naturally. Officers interview hundreds of people and can tell when answers are memorised.

What documents should I bring to a US visa interview? +

Bring your passport, DS-160 confirmation page, appointment confirmation, proof of ties such as an employment letter or business papers, and recent bank statements. You may not be asked for everything, but have it ready. Organise it so you can hand over any item in seconds.
